{summer vacay: hocking hills}

hocking hills has been on my bucket list for quite some time.  last summer i had reservations to take the rv to camp but then we sold it and i had to cancel.  so this year, we rented a cabin and explored the trails of ohio.  i loved that it only took 4 hours to get there an it felt like we were much farther away.  it was SOOOO beautiful!

the cabin was great! it was very secluded in a woods.  there was a path that lead to a creek and the kids loved hunting for crawdads.  they had several wrap around porches on the different levels.  i loved sitting out there drinking coffee and reading.  we were surprised that the bugs weren't bad at all.  we planned on eating out some, but we actually ended up just grilling and making everything at the cabin because we were about 25 minutes away from town.

there were several different trails: some were minutes away while others were a bit farther.  the first night we arrived we settled in our cabin and then went to rock house which was two minutes away.  this trail was super short but a great start after being in the car.  the kids loved going in the caves and climbing all over everything.

the next day we headed to old man's cave.  there were several waterfalls and crevices and rock formations that were just beautiful! we decided to hike from there to cedar falls. the in between trail was basically walking through a woods and the kids lost interest pretty quickly.  we hiked a total of 8 miles.  the last 1 1/2 miles was in a downpour and we could hear thunder in the distance.  kenna said it was more like hocking hell and all the kids said they were never hiking again.  they were not impressed but we made some great memories!

on saturday we took the kids to zipline.  because of our kids ages and weights we couldn't all do the same runs which created a bit of a downer.  the twins had to do the kids course and were able to go through it twice.  they are so hesitant to try new things so i wasn't sure how it would go.  they were grumpy and didn't want to do it but i finally convinced them to.  of course, once they did it they loved it.  john went with greyson and kenna.  they did the runs and it took them much longer.  they all enjoyed had a blast and want to do it again!

while the twins and i were waiting on the rest of the family there was a guy who lost his hearing aid.  tons of people were looking for it so we didn't join in the search because i felt like we would be in the way.  however, i did say a prayer that they would find it because i know how it feels to lose something important to you and hearing aids are expensive.  the guy finally gave up and no one found it.  over an hour later when john and the kids got back we went back into the store to buy some souvenirs.  when i walked out of the door, i happened to be looking down and found the hearing aid.  i wasn't even looking for it but there it was.  people had looked in this same spot and never found it.  i took it into the store and gave it to the clerk.  she had written down this man's contact info so all was well.  i felt God and in awe of how he allowed me to be the answer to my own prayer for this stranger.  i shared the story with the kids when we got back in the car because i want them to see God working in the small things.

we went for ice cream after ziplining and then went back to the cabin to eat dinner.  we coerced the kids into hiking the rim trail after our excruciating hike the day before.  they were hesitant but we didn't really give them a choice. ha! it was only 2.5 miles so it felt like nothing after the 8 miles the day before. we hiked the upper trial and there were places where the trail was only a foot or two wide.  it gave this mama a heart attack as the trails were muddy and slippery in some parts.  the twins both fell very close to the edge.  it was a little scary, but the view were gorgeous.

on sunday we packed up and headed out.  i would love to go back and hit up some more trails in this area. definitely a great spot that isn't too far from home.
