so life has been very different lately. we have been confined to our home (for the most part) since march 17th because of COVID-19. at first it was supposed to be temporary, but it has turned into school being cancelled for the rest of the school year. when it was just three weeks, i was a little excited. it was a welcomed break after a very busy season for our family. a time to make memories, love on my kids, and rest sounded fantastic. for those first few weeks, i felt like an all star mom doing art projects, puzzles, school work, reading, cleaning, outdoor activities (when the weather allowed) with the kids. we were having fun. we were even enjoying it.
john was working from home. he was really busy despite many of his restaurants being closed. they had clearance fliers to move product and he was a selling machine. unfortunately, this means we didn't see a whole lot of him. he started referring to the office as "the hole". he had to take on more accounts because they furloughed some of the salesmen. then they were having trouble keeping product in stock so he was getting up from 2 am to 4 am just to try to obtain product for his customers. it was awful and i often had a hard time going back to sleep so we were a bit tired and crabby. after 7 weeks at home, he's started going back out which has helped some, but he is working more hours than he did before all of this. many times, he goes to bed after supper. seriously, he is beat. i am ready to have my husband back.
we are on week 8 of being at home and it's not as much fun as the first three or four weeks. i'm running out of things to keep the kids entertained. they are watching WAY too much youtube. we're being well, lazy. hopefully the weather will turn and we can get outside more.
doing school at home has it's ups and downs. i miss my classroom kiddos but am thankful for technology. we zoom twice a week and they create messages on seesaw for me throughout the week. i am very connected to those who have internet. however, the majority of my class is doing paper packets so i don't have much, if any, contact with them. it's weird. it's sad. i wonder how they are doing. i much rather be in my classroom even with the stress and headaches that brings. as for being a teacher to my own kids-it's not great. there are soooo many battles. greyson and kenna do fine. they can do their things pretty independently. however, the twins act like school days are the end of the world. there is so much yelling, bribing, tears, frustration that i'm pretty much over it. it's not that the work is too hard, or too much-they just don't want to do it and they feed off of each other. we are counting down the days and will celebrate big when school is finished. i always make my kids do things in the summer, but we will take some time off before summer learning starts. for sure!
one of my favorite things about this is being able to join in with our friends from around the country and community for church on sundays. we've been listening to lots of different church services. one of my favorites was from a church in florida where john's college roommate goes. the pastor challenged everyone to a 3,2,1 challenge. you are to encourage 3 people, pray with 2, and do for 1 what you wish you could do for everyone. i've been trying to do this each week. encouraging 3 and doing for 1 has been easy but it has been challenging to pray with 2 people and it's often what gets left undone. it's easy to focus on ourselves so this has made me be more intentional with those around me.
things are starting to open back up and there is so much controversy about what is best and safe. we are in the camp of no masks, but i almost feel guilty going into stores without one because i'm a rule follower. i flip flop on my opinion daily about the whole thing. we are being safe, but we aren't freaking out over it either. we know God's got this and we can trust him. if his plan is for us to get it, we will trust him in that. we can't drive ourselves crazy living in fear.
our weeks in pictures. i will always cherish this time we've had together.
