we invited our cousins over labor day weekend for a sleepover. the kids were so excited because they all have someone near their age so it's perfect. unfortunately quinn couldn't come because he was at his moms but we still had a great time! they all played so nicely together.
we ate lots of yummy food, played outside, swam, went in the hot tub, and had a campfire. the kids were so tired they all fell asleep very quickly.
the next day we took them in the woods on the four wheelers and let them fish at my parent's pond. we decided that we needed to do it more often!
right before school started we found out that graham needed to have tubes put in his ears and have his tonsils and adenoids taken out. he had difficulty hearing and also said some sounds incorrectly (or not at all). we had to visit a audiologist and it was confirmed that he had no vibration in his ear drum and that he couldn't hear many sounds (especially in his right ear). he also was having trouble at night and it was discovered that he had sleep apnea. the ENT dr discovered that his tonsils were gigantic and he had little room back there and felt removal was needed.
he was so brave leading up to the surgery which was huge because he wouldn't even let the nurse weigh him at his regular check-up this summer. he understood that it would help him sleep and also allow him to hear better. we arrived at the hospital at 8 am. he did so well until we had to take off his clothes and put on his gown. he was not having it and was very grouchy with us. thankfully he drank the medicine that mellows them out before they go back for surgery and it was smooth sailing after that. when they wheeled him away, he didn't even look back or cry or ask for us or anything. i was so thankful because i don't think my heart could take it.
the actual surgery only lasted about 20 minutes but he had to be in recovery for a bit. they said he did great and they were able to get out so much gunk from his ears. the dr compared it to rubber cement-yuck! when he was wheeled back to us, he started crying immediately and kept saying his tongue was gone. he kept grabbing at it. i'm sure it felt numb and strange to him. they discharged him within 15 minutes of being in the room.
recovery was slow and painful for us all. he was pretty irritable most of the time and seemed to get worse on day 6 and 7 of recovery. i was not expecting that at all. thankfully day 9/10 was much better and he no longer wanted pain medicine. i was thankful for that because waking up every night at 12 and 4 was not something i enjoyed. it made for a long week and a half.
he still has a follow-up appointment with the ENT and will also have to go back to the audiologist to have his hearing retested. we are optimistic that his hearing will be back in the normal range and nothing else will need to be done. i'm thankful we made it this far without any surgeries and hospital visits. i hope this is the last for a long while!
